The MER tyrosine kinase, which is mutated in some forms of retinitis pigmentosum, is implicated in phagocytosis and is also a potential target for therapeutic intervention in leukaemia.

In situ proteolysis for protein crystallization and structure determination Nat Methods 2007 Dec; 4(12):1019-21

Aiping Dong and Linda Xu showed that the addition of trace amounts of chymotrypsin to crystallization trials allowed structure determination of 11 of 70 proteins that had resisted prior efforts at structure determination. This represents a doubling of the success rate from purified protein to 3D structure.
